What is a passion project?

A passion project is a project you decide to take on. No clients are involved - you create and assign yourself the project!

What's the purpose of a passion project?

If you're a fellow creative you've probably heard about "finding your niche." Passion projects are a great way to hone in on what you really enjoy doing whilst building up your skill in that area too!

When deciding on your project always keep your ideal client in mind. Many of my portfolio features are passion projects. Building up a portfolio that displays the style of work you love doing will in turn attract clients that have a similar style or are in the industry or niche you'd like to design for.

I also do passion projects if I'm trying to learn a new skill. I know what I know in my design programmes and it can be easy to stick with what you know. However it's always good to challenge yourself and increase your skills and knowledge in the software that you're using. Why not pick a project that will elevate your expertise and skill level?

When should you do passion projects?

You can do a passion project whenever you like! Personally I've found the best times are when business is slow or when you feel like you're not attracting your ideal customers. Sometimes I have a creative idea or a vision for a brand and I just create.... because why not?

Is it worth it?

You might be wondering if it's worth putting the time and energy into a project that you're not getting paid for... Personally I think the time invested is completely worth it. Building your portfolio, skill, honing in on what you enjoy, whilst keeping those creative juices flowing is gold!
